Senate votes to defund Reading First

Reading First program could be on its last legs

USA Today  July 1, 2008

The Senate Appropriations Committee voted to stop funding Reading First, a key part of President Bush's education program.  The program was intended to help low-income elementary student learn to read and has resulted in states receiving $1 billion per year since 2002.  The program has been controversial, however, because of corruption charges related to management of the program and recent research that throws into doubt the benefits of the program.
