Prudence L. Carter is an associate professor of in the School of Education and (by courtesy) the Department of Sociology at Stanford University. She is also the Co-Director of the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE). She received an M.A. in Sociology and Education from Columbia University, Teachers College, and an M. Phil. and Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University. Dr. Carter’s areas of research and teaching expertise are in the areas of inequality and the sociology of education, with a particularly focus on race, ethnicity, class, gender, culture and identity. She is the author of the award-winning book, Keepin’ It Real: School Success beyond Black and White (Oxford University Press 2005) and several other publications that have appeared in a host of peer-reviewed journals and edited book volumes.
